How the character counter works
The counter reads your text as you type and reports four things: total characters (spaces and line breaks included), word count, sentence count, and an approximate read time at roughly 200 words per minute. It then compares your character total against the published limit for each major network and shows how many characters you have left, flagging any platform you have gone over.
Characters are counted by Unicode code point, so a standard emoji counts as one. Note two platform quirks the raw count cannot show: X shortens every link to 23 characters through its t.co wrapper, and X counts many emoji as two characters. Treat the X figure as a close guide rather than an exact match when your post is link-heavy or emoji-heavy.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters is a tweet?A standard X (Twitter) post allows 280 characters. X Premium subscribers can post far longer, but 280 is the limit everyone can read without clicking “show more,” so it is the safe target for reach.
What is the ideal Instagram caption length?Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters, but only about the first 125 show before the caption is truncated with “more.” Front-load your hook and any call to action into that opening line.
Does the counter include spaces and emoji?Yes. Spaces and line breaks are counted, and each emoji counts as one character here. Some platforms (notably X) count certain emoji as two, so leave a little headroom for emoji-heavy posts.
Is this character counter free?Yes. It is free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded anywhere.
